Rónán and the Mermaid by Marianne McShane 2020
Review by Jenny Catalano
A resurgence of Old Ireland gets unearthed in the beautiful picture book, Ronan and the Mermaid. Be swept away into another world of mystery and folklore, set in the author’s hometown of Bangor, Ireland.
Ronan is washed ashore after a rough fishing trip and found by the Abbey monks, where he is looked after and returned to good health. But something or someone draws him back to the ocean. Will he tempt fate and return to the water?
Jordi Solano skilfully portrays the scenery with dusky, moody yet timely colours in the illustrations. Sure to impress readers of all ages and a perfect addition to any child’s book collection.
